Some stories stay with you forever. This is one of them.

When our son Owen was born with a life threatening condition called Congenital Diaphragmatic Hernia (CDH) our world changed in an instant. Days became weeks inside the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit. Every beep of a monitor every conversation with a doctor and every prayer carried the weight of hope. I can still hear the doors.

That sound the soft whoosh and click of the NICU doors opening became something I would recognize anywhere. Every time they opened my heart would stop for a second. I would look up already bracing myself already hoping. Sometimes it was a nurse coming in with an update. Sometimes it was a doctor with news we prayed would be good. And sometimes it was just the quiet reminder that life outside those walls kept moving even when ours had narrowed to a single tiny bed and a fragile breath.

And I was there with him. Every day. Standing beside his incubator placing my hand gently where I could speaking softly even when I wasn't sure he could hear me. I wanted him to know I was there. That he was never alone in any of it.

As a father I felt helpless. I wanted nothing more than to take away my son's pain.

One evening searching for strength I found myself looking at the cover of a Sports Illustrated magazine featuring my favorite baseball player Dustin Pedroia. His determination and heart inspired me to write him a letter not because I expected a reply but because I needed something to believe in. Writing that letter reminded me that even when the odds seem impossible you never stop fighting.

After 52 days in the NICU Owen finally came home. A few years later I read Beyond The Laces to my son. As I turned each page I saw our own journey reflected in its story. It wasn't just about football. It was about hope courage perseverance and the incredible strength of a child who refuses to give up.

The book reminded me that heroes come in many forms. Sometimes they're professional athletes. Sometimes they're parents holding on through impossible days. And sometimes they're children like Owen who teach us what true courage looks like.

Today Owen is thriving. He laughs plays and reminds us every day that hope is stronger than fear.

For me the success of Beyond The Laces isn't measured by books sold. It's measured by the hope it gives families facing their own battles and by every smile it brings to a child who needs encouragement.

My hope is that one day every family walking the halls of a children's hospital will know they are not alone and that through kindness faith and perseverance brighter days are possible.
